Raising children who will need us less.

Try one question tonight.

“What do you want to do this weekend?”

Your child is not weak. Your child is outcompeted, by engineers paid to win a nine-year-old’s attention. This page measures what is actually happening to your child’s own thinking, and gives you one thing to do about it.

SIGNAL Parents is the family branch of SIGNAL, the book and framework by Dr Maamoun Abdul Fattah. About the book

Screen time is the wrong number.

Every parent already knows the hours. Knowing them changes almost nothing. The question that matters is quieter: are the capacities that make up independent thinking forming, or being handed over?

Sitting with boredom

What happens in the first ten minutes with nothing to do.

Making their own decisions

Whether they choose, or wait for you or a screen to choose for them.

Asking real questions

Questions a search box cannot answer: why is he sad, why do people lie.

Staying with hard things

How long before a struggle is handed to help, a device, or an AI.

Making something from nothing

A story, a game, a drawing that was not copied from a video.

Remembering before searching

Trying to recall first, before the answer is looked up.

The home around them

What the adults model. This one is about us, not them.

What SIGNAL Parents works on

Screens and attention

Short videos, gaming, sleep, outdoor time, boredom, focus. Seen by an eye doctor, not a wellness account.

Independence

Doing things alone, solving their own problems, being allowed to struggle.

Responsibility

Homework, belongings, consequences, and moving them, year by year, from parent to child.

Thinking and AI

Questions, judgment, and using AI without handing it the thinking.

SIGNAL Parents is not about getting children off screens. It is about raising children who can think, choose and focus in a world full of them.

I see children in clinic every day. There is something no medical report records: a child waiting a full hour without asking a single question. Not restless. Silent, with a device in hand.

Ten years ago, the waiting child asked a hundred questions. Why does the doctor wear white? What is that machine? Is it our turn yet?

Those questions were never an interruption. They were thinking, being formed.

The Continuity Index

Fifteen questions about what you observe at home. You answer about your child. You get a result with a name, the one capacity that needs you most, one protocol for it, and a date to check again.

The 90-day family protocol

The Index tells you where things stand. The protocol is what changes them. The first group will be small, and the families in it will help shape it.

  1. Start from your child’s Index result, not from a generic plan.
  2. One change per week, matched to their age, in English and Arabic.
  3. A short weekly check-in, so you know if it is working before you give up on it.
  4. Retest at day 90 and see the change in your child’s own numbers.

Schools: if you want to run the Index with a class or a parent community, choose “school leader” in the form and we will write to you.

One framework, two doors

SIGNAL began as a book about protecting attention and judgment in adult life. SIGNAL Parents applies the same framework to the people who are still building theirs.

The theory behind the protocols

Every protocol on this page comes from SIGNAL: Seeing Clearly When Everything Is Loud. Read it to understand why the environment keeps winning against willpower, and how to build one that doesn’t.

In the Gulf, the ebook is available on Kobo and Apple Books.
